Blind spots are a huge contributory factor to vehicle and pedestrian
collisions across a range of industries. The substantial height and length of many commercial vehicles greatly
limits driver visibility. Added to this operator positions, bodywork panels, absent rear windows and bulkheads all
create further restrictions.
Every year 400 people are killed in EU countries when drivers fail to detect objects in their blind spots when
manoeuvring.
There has been much debate about mirrors creating further blind spots and an ‘information overload’ for drivers who
don’t know where to look first. Knocked mirrors, requiring regular repositioning and broken mirrors in the truck
wash have all raised the question of suitability.
Camera monitor systems (CMS) have brought driver vision into the twenty first century
offering wider angles of view, clearer pictures and the ability to view all images on a single monitor, triggered
by driver selection such as reverse gear or left indicator.
CMS are used in a range of applications to cover various blind spots including the nearside,
front, rear, internal and specialist applications.
